Data Accuracy

SafeSuburb presents crime statistics sourced from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and population data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Census 2022. While we take reasonable care to present this data accurately, we make no warranty or guarantee regarding the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or currency of any information displayed on this website.

Specifically:

  • Crime statistics reflect reported crime only as published by SAPS. Actual crime levels may differ from reported figures. Under-reporting varies significantly by area and by crime type; see how much crime goes unreported for reporting rates from Stats SA's GPSJS survey.
  • SAPS data is published at police precinct level, not per suburb. All suburbs within the same precinct share identical crime statistics. This does not mean all suburbs within a precinct have the same level of safety.
  • Population data for City of Cape Town precincts comes from official precinct-level Census 2022 profiles. Population data for all other precincts uses municipality-level Census 2022 figures, which are shared across multiple precincts within the same municipality. Per-capita crime rates for these precincts represent the broader municipal area, not the individual precinct.
  • Trends vs prior year and baseline comparisons are calculated from SAPS data and may be affected by changes in reporting practices, precinct boundaries, or other factors outside our control.
  • Suburb-to-precinct mapping is compiled from publicly available sources and may contain errors. Some suburbs may be assigned to an incorrect precinct.

Not Safety Advice

SafeSuburb is an informational tool, not a safety advisory service. The information on this website:

  • Should not be used as the sole basis for decisions about where to live, work, invest, or travel
  • Does not constitute a safety rating or endorsement of any area
  • Does not predict future crime levels or guarantee personal safety in any location
  • Should be considered alongside other sources of information, personal observation, and professional advice

A low crime count in SAPS data does not mean an area is safe. A high crime count does not mean an area is dangerous for every individual. Crime data is one of many factors that contribute to an understanding of an area.

Limitation of Liability

SafeSuburb, its owners, operators, and contributors shall not be held liable for any loss, damage, injury, or harm arising from the use of, or reliance on, information presented on this website. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Financial losses from property transactions influenced by data on this site
  • Personal injury or harm resulting from decisions based on information on this site
  • Any inaccuracies, errors, or omissions in the data presented
  • Delays in updating data following new SAPS releases

Third-Party Data

All crime data is sourced from SAPS and all population data from Stats SA. SafeSuburb is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with the South African Police Service, Statistics South Africa, or any government department. We republish publicly available data in a more accessible format.

Intellectual Property

The presentation, design, and derived analysis on SafeSuburb are the property of SafeSuburb. The underlying crime data is public domain as published by SAPS. Population data is published by Stats SA under public access terms.

Analytics and Feedback

SafeSuburb uses Umami Analytics to collect anonymous, aggregate page view data (pages visited, approximate location by country, device type). No personal information is collected and no cookies are used for tracking.

Pages may display an optional feedback prompt asking whether you found the information useful. If you respond, we collect the page and its province, your rating, the reason and any detail you pick, any text you type, the time, and your browser's user agent string. It goes to our own automation server at auto.lefty23.co.za, on a server we rent from Hetzner in Helsinki, Finland, is written to a private Google Sheet that we review by hand, and a short notification reaches us through Telegram. It is used solely to improve the service. You are never required to respond, and you should not type anything personal into it. Our privacy notice covers this in full.

Advertising and Sponsored Content

SafeSuburb may display paid advertising and sponsored placements from third parties. Any such placement is clearly labelled "Sponsored". A sponsored placement is paid advertising by the advertiser and is not an endorsement, recommendation, or safety recommendation by SafeSuburb. We do not verify, vet, or vouch for any advertiser, their services, or their claims, and we are not a party to any dealings you have with them.

Sponsored links take you to the advertiser's own website, which has its own terms and privacy practices that we do not control. We do not share your personal information with advertisers; clicking a sponsored link simply opens their site.
