Privacy Notice
SafeSuburb collects very little, and none of it identifies you unless you choose to write to us. This notice says exactly what is collected and by whom. It was last updated on 12 September 2026.
Who is responsible
SafeSuburb is operated by Lefty23 (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2026/706220/07, a private company registered in South Africa and based in Cape Town; its postal address is available on request. Under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) the company is the responsible party for the personal information processed on this site.
Its Information Officer is the director of Lefty23 (Pty) Ltd, registered with the Information Regulator under registration number 2026-066332, and reachable at [email protected].
If you use the contact form
The form on our contact page collects the name, email address and message you type, together with the page you sent it from. Supplying them is voluntary; without them we cannot reply, which is the only consequence of not supplying them. We use them to answer you and to keep a record of the correspondence. We do not add you to any mailing list and we do not use your address for anything else.
Submissions are delivered through our own contact service at contact.lefty23.co.za and read in a mailbox operated by Google, which means the message is stored outside South Africa by a processor bound by its own data protection commitments, as section 72 of POPIA permits.
Analytics
We use Umami, which we host ourselves at umami.lefty23.co.za, and only on the live site. It records the page visited, the referring site, approximate location by country, and device and browser type. It sets no cookies, does not follow you across other websites, and does not collect anything that identifies you.
The feedback prompt
Some pages show an optional prompt asking whether the information was useful. If you answer, we record the page and its province, your rating, the reason and any detail you pick, any text you type, the time, and your browser's user agent string. You are never required to answer, and the prompt asks for nothing that identifies you. Please do not type anything personal into the text box.
Your answer goes to our own automation server at auto.lefty23.co.za, which runs on a server we rent from Hetzner in Helsinki, Finland. It is written to a private Google Sheet that we review by hand, and a short notification reaches us through Telegram. That means the answer is stored outside South Africa by processors bound by their own data protection commitments, as section 72 of POPIA permits.
Hosting and security logs
The site is served by Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare records the IP address, browser type and pages requested for each visit, for security and abuse prevention, and holds those logs on our behalf for a short period as our operator. We do not use them to identify visitors. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie when it screens a request; we set no cookies of our own.
What we never do
- We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
- We have no accounts and no sign-in, so we hold no passwords.
- We hold no information about any individual's involvement in crime. Every crime figure on this site is an area-level statistic published by SAPS.
How long we keep things
Correspondence is kept for as long as it takes to answer you and to keep a record of the exchange. Analytics and feedback data are aggregate and are kept while they remain useful for improving the site. Security logs are kept for the short period Cloudflare retains them.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may ask us to confirm, free of charge, whether we hold personal information about you, ask for a copy of it, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we process it. Write to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days, and we never charge for a correction or a deletion.
Our PAIA manual, which sets out how to request access to records we hold, is published at lefty23.co.za/paia/.
If you are not satisfied with our answer you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): inforegulator.org.za, [email protected], 010 023 5200.
Changes
If this notice changes we update the date at the top. What SafeSuburb does with crime data, and the limits of that data, are covered separately in our disclaimer.
